Growing Trend: Women in Fantasy Football

And so another football season is nearly upon us. This is to be my ninth season playing fantasy football. Nine years of following players and building strategies. Nine years of stealing picks and praying for the success of my sleepers. Nine years of spending Sundays simultaneously glued to the TV and computer, with a cold beer in my hand. I yell at the refs, and call out the Quarterbacks. I wear my favorite jersey and I send taunting texts to fellow league owners. I fully immerse myself into the ranks of superfans as I lead my fantasy team(s) to victory. However, what surprises most opponents, is that I am a woman.

I didn't always like the game of football. In fact, ten years ago I couldn't tell you the first thing about the game. I started a fantasy football team one year on a whim. I reasoned that if half-brained, beer-guzzling idiots could manage a team, I'd surely be able to handle it. I didn't need extensive knowledge of the game, I just needed to be statistical in my approach. I studied a couple fantasy football magazines, and I entered my first draft feeling confident. I mean, this was a league of all men, and no one really expected me to excel. So if I lost, no harm done right?

I bombed that first draft. I pissed off the men, not knowing the players names or positions. I took every second of my allotted time, as I frantically scanned the cheat sheet that came with my football magazine. Then I proceeded to piss people off further when I needed names, positions, and teams repeated over and over again. Perhaps I was in over my head, but I chose to believe that it was just a beginners hazing. I took the team that I had drafted and stood strong. After my initial stumble, I came back in full force. I did my research, carefully planned trades, and dropped players that I had picked for their interesting names. My skin got a little thicker, and week by week, my team got stronger. At the end of that first year, I not only fully appreciated the game of football, but I was enjoying it. I ended up winning overall in our league. I rubbed that fact in every single person’s face…and I was hooked.

Now, here I am, years later, a seasoned, fantasy football veteran. I have long-since graduated to a real cheat sheet. One that I spend my hard-earned money on, and one that guarantees my team the edge. I refuse to let my friends know where I get my information and I safely guard my “inside” tips like the Holy Grail. I spend hours researching players. I manage a minimum of three teams a year. I eavesdrop on anyone talking football, and sometimes I even find myself tuning into ESPN.

Fantasy Football has been good to me. It has helped to understand the game of football. I have learned so much more than how to read stats. I fully understand the logistics of the game and the importance of every position.

My advice to women entering the world of fantasy football, is to come strong or don't even bother. Please, I beg of you, don't be the stereotypical woman who's nagging their husband to go shopping on Sunday. Don't join a fantasy league with the intent to play the damsel in distress. Not knowing what's going on isn't impressing anyone. Asking a million questions during the game only annoys the people that actually care about their team and players. Trust me when I say that asking who's playing as you're clearly looking at the TV, isn't cute, it's unintelligent. Don't draft a team and leave empty spots on your roster. Make sure you have your by-weeks covered. Make sure you know what a by-week is. Don't draft players because they look hot in the Calvin Klein ad in the back of your Cosmo magazine. If you're serious about joining the many strong, independent female football fans, then don't make us look bad. Do your research, get reliable resources and cheat sheets. Keep up on the injury reports. Be proud of your team and know your players strengths and weaknesses. Be ready to school any man who dares call you on your knowledge of the game. Render them all speechless when you spit out stats and strategies. Earn their respect. Be the fan, not the whining sidekick.

I am female, and I love football. Join me, if you've got what it takes
