Mock Draft Manners in
Fantasy Football

As
the popularity of fantasy football has exploded one of the more
enjoyable creations has been the mock draft. Hard as it may be to
believe to the uninitiated, pretending to draft a fantasy team is a
useful tool for testing out strategy and is just a hell of a lot of
fun. Both Yahoo and ESPN offer a mock draft feature. Other providers
may offer them as well but I have yet to try them. Both Yahoo and
ESPN offer a chat feature in which you can communicate with your
fellow mock drafters. If you're new to mock drafting or have been
doing it for a while here are some good rules to follow.
- Try
not to sign up for a draft if you can't participate. These mock
drafts are designed to help people try out different draft
strategies and therefore work best when populated by actual people.
If you sign up for a draft and can't participate it's not the end of
the world as the computer will take over for you but many people
decide which draft to join based on the amount of people registered
for that draft. Don't make a habit out of it.
Don't make ridiculous picks just to be ridiculous. I understand it's
only a mock draft. Still people do have to make a time investment in
order to participate. There's nothing wrong with outside of the box
thinking but drafting David Akers in the first round doesn't make
you funny, it sabotages the rest of the draft and makes you a jerk.
If
you have to leave turn on the auto-draft. This is a highly
irritating thing folks do most likely without thinking. Its a huge
source of annoyance when you're part of a fast moving draft with
well prepared participants then one or two people bail in the later
rounds don't turn on the auto-draft and the draft slows to a crawl.
Usually there's a small box you can check on the web page to enable
auto-draft. If you have to bail, take a split second and click the
box. Your fellow mock drafters will appreciate it.
Don't flip out if someone takes longer than 30 seconds to make a
pick. On the flip side of the previous issue are the folks who
immediately start flaming the chat board if someone doesn't make a
pick the first nanosecond their selection comes up. Hey folks relax.
Some people do take the mocks seriously and may need a little time
to consider their choices and strategy. Just be prepared, have some
patience and enjoy the draft. Remember it's supposed to be fun.
Don't abuse the chat feature. Hey a little trash talk is fun.
Razzing your fellow drafters for dubious picks can be very
entertaining but don't take it too far. Don't be belligerent, don't
drag it on and on and on. The chat is much better used for
discussion among fans about trends in fantasy football and news on
players and coaches. People participate in these mock drafts from
all over the country and could give you some unique perspective on
players in their neck of the woods
