I go through the same ritual every year. It’s week 14 and the season is winding down. I’m in the middle of an intense time consuming research session trying to cobble together a winning line-up for that final playoff push. This wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the fact that I had to do this for five different teams, with five different scoring systems, five different waiver systems, you get the idea. I’m starting to get tired and I tell myself , “never again…five leagues is too many. Next season I’m cutting back to two, maybe three leagues at most…yeah that’s it.”

Inevitably after the seemingly interminable off-season finally ends, I easily convince myself that seven leagues is actually the sweet spot for league participation this year and off we go. The simple fact is that fantasy football is fun. We wouldn’t play if it weren’t. The more leagues you participate in the more opportunity you have to win. When you only have one team to manage and that team sucks it ain't much fun. Managing a winning fantasy team does take time though, managing five, six, or eight teams takes up a LOT of time. What we fantasy fanatics need are tools. Tools that fit into our digital lifestyles, tools that make it easier for the fantasy football power player to fit his or her passion into an already busy life. What we need is an app (apps are short for application, tiny programs that run on mobile devices like iphones). Not just any app but the ultimate fantasy football app. Read on to find out what we believe the ultimate fantasy football app must include.
  1.  Mufti-platform - We’ve got busy lives, jobs, families and we’re constantly on the go. Added to which the NFL moves fast. Injuries, suspensions and a multitude of other variables require almost immediate reaction from fantasy owners to take advantage of a situation or make the necessary contingencies if something goes awry. The perfect fantasy football app needs to be available on as many platforms as possible. Windows, MAC, Iphone, ipad, Blackberry, and Android integration are an absolute must. If Hewlett-Packard releases any Web OS enabled devices we’d like to see those supported as well.

  2.  Works with all fantasy providers - Hey we’re talking about a perfect world here. We want to be able to manage our fantasy teams no matter what provider is hosting the league. All of the major players here need to be supported, Yahoo, ESPN, CBS, Fanball, you get the idea. We want full roster management, depth chart adjustment, trades, player updates, the works.
  3.  Real Time Scoring - DUH. This is essential. We absolutely need to be able to follow our various teams in real time all at the same time.

  4.  News Feeds – Our dream app would allow you the ability to select your favorite fantasy football writers, bloggers, and news outlets and have their content displayed in the app. Ideally you would choose a writer and then whenever that writer tweets, or posts an article or blog you would optionally receive an alert and then could read the content without having to leave the application.

  5.  Automatic Fantasy Team Depth Chart Adjustment – In order to win championships in competitive leagues or any league for that matter managing injuries is essential. The dreaded game time decision has decided the outcome of many a fantasy football match-up. It's happened to us all right? The experts were sure that so and so was a lock to start and then blamo! A late scratch and we're sitting there with a big fat goose egg in the line up. Imagine a world where we have the perfect fantasy football app. Imagine that our app is connected to the NFL's game status database. Imagine if we could simply queue up our depth chart and if the player in the starters spot is designated as OUT for the game our app automatically would slide the next player in our queue into that spot. For people who work third shift like me this would be a godsend. No more waking up after only a couple of hours sleep to check the latest in-actives. As long as I've done my homework throughout the week come game day I can have my queue set up and I can rest easy with the knowledge that my app will make a last second change if needed.

  6.  Real time injury updates – How many times have you been out with the family all day on Sunday confident that your studs were taking care of business only to find out when you got home that your stud went down with an injury. Adding insult to that injury some guy in your league was squatting at his laptop when your player went down and immediately grabbed his backup. Might have been nice to get an alert from your favorite fantasy football application when your guy got hurt. Might be nice to use that same application to put his backup on YOUR roster before the other guy.

There are a few applications that offer some of the functionality that we've listed above but none that I know of which do them all, or particularly well. If you can think of other things you'd like to see in your perfect fantasy football application tell us about it at: jermain@fantasyfootballmanifesto.com.
